How some major cities in Latin America are safer than many cities in the U.S.

🔪 The actual places you should be scared of
As the X/Twitter account, Latinometrics, writes in the tweet below:
“One would have thought that Miami, the US capital of the Latin world, would be less dangerous than most of Latin America's major cities.
However, when compared by the most common measure for how safe a city is — homicides per 100K people, Miami actually ranked worse than Buenos Aires (Argentina), São Paulo (Brazil), Santiago (Chile), and Mexico City in 2022.”
🙅♂️ 🔪 Who says Latin America is dangerous?
think again, as some cities outshine their US counterparts…

The headlines: America = safe. Scary, outside-our-country places = not safe!!
The reality: Not true at all!!
Now does this mean you should throw caution to the wind when visiting any city in Latin America?
No. Also, other kinds of crime are still pretty prevalent, like pickpocketing.
These are just some cities mentioned above — there are LOTS, like the thread above points out, that are NOT safe by any measure - just look at Guayaquil, Ecuador, from this post I made 👀
So what now? Not all Latin American cities are that dangerous, so remember that when considering stuff like traveling for vacation, because you may be sleeping on some of the greatest cities in the world, like São Paulo, Brazil.
You might even be surprised that certain U.S. cities that you probably never hear about in the news (looking at you, Dallas) are actually much more dangerous than you may think.
Still curious?
A good little read on why violence has (in general) surged at a country-level throughout LatAm (hint hint: because of American companies flooding the region with guns)
A decent brief on how El Salvador massively lowered the homicide rate in the country — quite a few others are trying to imitate this success now
And here’s a great tweet on conspiracy theories —
Most conspiracy theories require me to believe that a sprawling hyper competent and ruthless organization got figured out by the dimwit explaining the theory to me
