🤫 The crisis that no one is talking about
The headlines: crazy explosion in violence in Ecuador - look at all these people getting killed with no context given!! 🙀
The reality: to my surprise, beyond the headlines, the news has been doing a pretty decent job describing how one of the most peaceful countries in Latin America has been overrun by violence, so let’s jump to the TLDR👇
The TLDR: to our knowledge, this is basically what happened (which the video above explains very well):
US demand for cocaine has been 📉 (maybe bc of the fentanyl scare?) while Europe’s demand for cocaine has been 📈
Security along traditional drug routes got tougher to get through + Euro demand = cocaine production 📈 in the two main cocaine-producing countries, Colombia and Peru.
Mexican and Colombian cartels looked for new routes to get to this fresh market in Europe
As demand in Europe 📈, European gangs got more involved and linked up with these cartels, who found a pretty peaceful, non-militarized country (Ecuador) with a big port city (Guayaquil) to use as their base to send cocaine to Europe
Facing no resistance from The Old Guard (a Colombian rebel army that known as the FARC, which disbanded in 2017) that controlled these drug routes, cartels fought to fill the void
Violence 📈 as these new players fought for control and took on the Ecuadorian government, which had never dealt with cartels before
What to expect next? Current young-gun Ecuadorian president, Daniel Naboa, is engaged in a war against these gangs and cartels; i.e., he just got approval 4 days ago in a referendum to let the military patrol the streets.
The big message? Don’t do cocaine, kids (forreal) - consumer demand is a big part of the problem!
