🔥 Hot Take Friday
"If you don't buy a house, how can you build equity?"

If you don’t know who he is, Ramit Sethi is a best-selling author who has helped millions of Americans improve their spending habits.
He’s the God to my Moses.
I’m a HUGE fan of his and highly recommend his book - it may change your life.
Back to the Hot Take — people, especially Americans, overhype tf out of buying a house — like it’s a mandatory rite of passage as you get older. Look, I’m not telling you to NOT buy a house, or that buying a house is a bad investment.
What I AM saying is that people treat it like a surefire way of building wealth and stability, which is just incredibly not true. We should always question what is considered “normal” for us to spend our money on, like a HUGE car payment or a house.
Personally, I think if you want to buy a house, you need to be ready for paying for LOTS of stuff that you may not have been told about, like upkeep & maintenance (replacing the A/C, roof repair, lawncare, etc.) that can costs tens of thousands of dollars.
Why do we not grow up with our parents screaming at us to invest our lemonade stand money into the S&P 500, given that you’re basically guaranteed ~8% return YOY + the magic of compounding!
Anyways, my point is, while buying a house can create wealth in certain scenarios, that is no way near the only way OR the best way.
P.S. Ramit also has a great series on Netflix called “How to Get Rich” — YES I KNOW, it sounds gimmicky and financial-guru af, but it’s not — it’s actually great practical advice.
