I’m chronically online, finding out how the world works.

⬇️ Let’s get it.

🚭 What’s up with vaping?

I think we all can remember the 9/11 for the Zoomers — the day that the FDA banned Juul products in 2022. I only ever ~dabbled~ in vaping, but man, RIP to those delicious mint pods 😮‍💨

Well, good news for those that vape — the FDA reversed that decision on June 6 last week.

Not sure if this is why they made this decision, but turns out that restricting flavors had QUITE the unintended side effect for 18-20 year olds — they decided to just turn to regular smoking 👇

🗞️ The headlines: (in 2022) we saved the youth by banning Juul!

🌱 The reality: sadly, it wasn’t that simple 🥴

  1. The genie was out of the bottle — people already cracked the code on how to get young people to “smoke” again:

    • Just make the e-cig slim, easy to use and hide, taste good, and without the shame and nastiness of actual smoke.

    • Now, ~10% of high school students regularly vape

  2. However, smoking rates are still near historic lows in the U.S. (yay!), even though roughly 1/5 adults in the world regularly smoke (🥜).

  3. Good news - although current research suggests that vaping is not as deadly as smoking, it’s still not great for you (surprise!). Tbh, it seems kind of like substituting Coke with Diet Coke - it’s a win, but it feels like you’re still kind of playing the same stupid game, so you’ll probably win a stupid prize.

So will the FDA’s reversal of its ban of Juul products and flavors bring these kids back to vaping? No clue. About 1/5 people vaped before COVID/the ban in 2022, but that’s looking much higher now.

What’s to come? Not sure either — we basically publicly campaigned against and taxed the life out of cigarette sales, so maybe that’ll happen with vaping…?

Still curious?

  • Check out Our World in Data’s great post on smoking, like how ~ 1/7 deaths worldwide are due to smoking, meaning that tobacco kills more people every day than terrorism kills in an entire year.

I recommend you don’t smoke.. BUT.. c’mon, it does look pretty cool
