🤑 The truth about your economic well-being
New Harris-Guardian poll:
- 56% say US is in recession (reality: 7 straight quarters of positive GDP growth)
- 49% say stocks are down YTD (reality: S&P500 up 12%)
- 49% say unemployment at a 50-year high (reality: U3 has been under 4% longer than any period since the 1960s)— Derek Thompson (@DKThomp)

Man, where to start with this one.
Y’all have heard me talk already about “vibe-onomics,” but after seeing this poll, I feel further validated about people’s total inability to see beyond personal anecdotes.
I pretty much agree with Derek Thompson’s take here:
“Hottish take: I'm tired of ppl saying this is just a media failure. Of course it's partly a media failure; US media is very ideological and negative-biased.
But it's also obviously an audience failure.
~60% of households own stocks! Fidelity's website isn't negativity-biased!
I think the most generous interpretation of events is that ppl in surveys evaluate the economy (a) as being all of a piece and (b) through a partisan lens.
Because of (a), frustration about rates and prices leads to omni-negativity about everything econ-related ("whatever you ask me about, I'm just gonna say it's bad") and (b) leads to conservative respondents claiming that everything under Biden is going to hell in a hand basket.”
Also, this poll has been making the rounds on X/Twitter, showing how “for haters, there’s no time like the present.”
A couple golden nuggets from this second poll I just linked to —
~20% of Americans said that right now has more war than… the 40s…… when WWII happened….
NEARLY 60% say right now is the worst economy…. more than the Great Depression.. when 25% of Americans were unemployed!!!
This is a live shot of me when I saw these polls:

Still curious?
I’m pumped to check out this book by one of my favorite Gen Z econ writers, Kyla Scanlon, on how to make sense of the economy past the headlines (catch me ~swooning~)
Her newsletter is fire too
And here’s your 🔥 tweet for your day —
Im not sure what the kind of guy who can pull this off looks like but I’ve never seen it done well. Ever. In my whole life.
