🗂️ What does your culture value?
Thursday's knowledge bomb - the culture that determines your behavior

I’m chronically online, finding out how the world works.
⬇️ Let’s get it.
🗂️ What does your culture value?
In cultures of politeness, dissent is a threat to social harmony. People nod and smile even if they disagree, and silence fuels groupthink.
In cultures of integrity, dissent is a sign of commitment to quality. People voice their views, and respectful debate improves decisions.

For better or worse, we’ve all worked at different companies that value and promote specific types of behavior.
I love how the founder of Netflix, Reed Hastings, pushed for “farming for dissent” at his company - i.e., managers would have to ask their subordinates, on a regular basis, what are three things they would do differently if they were in their shoes.
For them, being silent when you want to disagree was considered disloyal behavior, because you cared more about not coming off as disagreeable over the truth.
Sometimes this leads to culture clash, which is currently happening in one of the biggest companies in the world.
You may have seen in the recent news how one of the world’s largest companies and largest chipmakers, TSMC (from Taiwan), is building a chip factory in Arizona.
Well, as you can imagine, the Taiwanese and U.S. workers don’t seem to be getting along too well 👀
Check out this longer read here from economist Noah Smith on why U.S. workers and Taiwanese workers are culture clashing —
Here’s a sample of a culture clash from the post:
“Several former American employees said they were not against working longer hours, but only if the tasks were meaningful. “I’d ask my manager ‘What’s your top priority,’ he’d always say ‘Everything is a priority,’” said another ex-TSMC engineer. “So, so, so, many times I would work overtime getting stuff done only to find out it wasn’t needed.”…
The Americans also resented that Taiwanese colleagues stayed late at the office for no good reason. “That pisses me off,” [former TSMC engineer] Bruce said. “They were just doing it for show.”…
Thanks for taking the Pack,
Zach
