🤒 The new American epidemic

women's basketball, the fall of Saudi Arabia, & California dystopia

Welcome to Z-Pack:.because your brain could use a good scrubbing.

If this is your first Z-Pack, welcome - I'm Zach.

I’m chronically online, finding out how the world works.

⬇️ Let’s get it.

🧟‍♂️ California dystopia

You might blame California’s dysfunction on liberals, but honestly, it’s really because of these two things:

(1) the state’s insane web of regulations*;

(2) its super decentralized decision-making process.

This means that it takes a lot of time and is very expensive to get approval for new construction, AND your douchebag neighbor, city council, county government, etc. has insane amounts of power to approve, alter, or reject your construction project, based on these regulations.

It’s a perfect cocktail that’s led to an ongoing mass exodus of people from California to other states that are cheaper and allow you to build things

*the state's stringent environmental review process under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), while designed to protect the environment, often serves as a tool for litigation that can delay or block projects.
Death to CEQA!

🏀 The Caitlin Clark effect

If you didn’t hear, University of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark is arguably single-handedly responsible for the skyrocketing views of college female basketball.

And it’s now hitting the WNBA.

Does all it take is one superstar player for a women’s sport to explode in popularity?

Try and find below how Caitlin compares to other players this season…

🇸🇦 The fall of Saudi Arabia

The short and skinny on their economy: a royal family runs Saudi Arabia, which is highly dependent on oil for revenue - not great. Oil is a commodity, which means its price goes up and down based on complex supply and demand.

So Crown Prince (dictator..) Mohammed bin Salman’s master plan for making sure his country isn’t screwed in the long-term?

Invest in sports entertainment and silly PR stunts, like building a new city called Neom, with an urban development project with a cool name - The Line.

Well, looks like The Line is being MASSIVELY scaled back.

Shocker 🤯

🎰 The new American epidemic

As data analyst Joey Politano describes here, it seems bad that America’s young men are diving head-over-shoulders into putting their money into meme stocks, gambling, and crypto - unstable things that can increase poverty.
