đź’° This lie that keeps going viral is driving me crazy

I gotta be honest with you - I’m getting pretty sick and tired of seeing this go viral👇

When you buy something from a store, sometimes the cashier asks if you want to round up to the nearest dollar as a donation.

Contrary to the opinion of the meme above, these donations help charities - they’re really good, actually.

But it’s become popular to think that corporations just get a tax write-off from your donation.

If you choose to round up or not, that’s your business - BUT, the second you go around trying to convince people on Insta or TikTok that round-up campaigns are actually some corporate scheme to get tax write-offs, THAT’s when I get involved *cracks knuckles*

Multiple things can be true at once:

  1. These round-up campaigns are actually REALLY helpful for charities - they make millions of dollars from them.*

  2. Contrary to the viral, self-righteous takes, corporations get no tax write-off benefit for participating in a round-up campaign

  3. As the consumer, YOU are the one who can get a tax deduction from rounding up

  4. It can still feel like a weird, awkward thing when you’re asked to donate

  5. It can feel like the company is just greasing its palms and benefitting itself (even though it’s not)

*I work in the nonprofit world and train tons of nonprofits in Latin America on how to do round-up campaigns, which now help them make tons of money (and they’re usually the first to ever do it in their countries!🎉) This kind of campaign matters!!

So the people who think they’re doing some public good by spreading this lie are actually doing damage by trying to convince thousands of people to not donate to charities in round-up campaigns - boooooo.

The next time you come across this, just remember that only the partnering charity actually benefits from your donation, not the corporate overlords.

Thanks for taking the Pack,

Zach
