People want to believe there are secret chemicals in their food instead of the mundane reality: they live a sedentary car-centric lifestyle w/hyper-palatable high-calorie foods

🗞️ The headlines: Europeans have healthier/better quality food than Americans — this is why you feel better when you visit Europe!
🌱 The reality: You don’t feel better in Europe because you’re eating better foods.
Here’s why:
Like the famous author Ramit Sethi states above, unfortunately, life is not as spicy and conspiratorial as we’d like it to be, so we have to settle for the boring reality:
If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight. This, again, is mostly referring to the average joe.
It is physically impossible to ignore this hard fact, no matter what all the warriors against seed oils or the yo-yo dieting suburban moms try to convince you of.
Yes, the European Union does have more regulations of chemicals and additives to their food than the U.S. But, if you eat the same foods in Europe as you do here, and the only difference is that you’re walking much more in Europe, you will lose weight because you are burning more calories.
AND, you will most likely feel better, because
(1) we have evolved over 100s of thousands of years to walk and benefit from it, and
(2) you are most likely on vacation, so not stressing about work definitely helps.
Sadly, we cannot blame the evil corporations or some sinister all-powerful government for our weight.
We’ve talked before about the false binary of seeing food as either good or bad for you, when it really just depends on your goals — how much muscle do you want to grow? How skinny do you want to be? And tailoring your diet around that.
Just as the sky is blue and the grass is green, the food you put into your mouth, how much of it, and how many calories you burn a day will 99% determine your weight.
Still curious?

Overall there is a strong positive relationship: countries with higher rates of overweight tend to have a higher supply of calories.
